Overview

Through the colorful history of Texas and its "Six Flags," it has earned its moniker as "everything is bigger in Texas." From the earliest European settlers (French) in Matagorda Bay to the Spanish dominance for 131 years to the shorter lived times under the Mexican and Republic of Texas flags, Texas joined the US as the 28th state in 1845. Cotton, ranching and timber dominated the economy until 1901 when petroleum was found thus beginning the "oil boom." Texas has so many resources and throughout its history, a rich tapestry has been woven through the lifestyles of these storied Texans.
